Too broke to retire

The Irish workforce is ageing and since the recession, one of the main issues now facing potential retirees is that they cannot afford to actually retire.

In the RTÉ TV Documentary Unit's Too Broke To Retire pensioners who planned for a comfortable retirement talk about their concerns just making ends meet as they face recession hardship and potential budget cuts.

New HQ for Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group

As part of our long-term strategy and the successful growth of our business, as of today, Monday 5 August 2013, Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group will be moving into new UK headquarters known as The St Botolph Building in London.

Designed by Grimshaw architects, the building is a landmark development on a site that forms a key gateway to the City of London, a short distance from our current offices. Our new premises will provide an excellent environment with state-of-the-art facilities, plus it brings all of our London based employees together in one building for the first time.


Earlier this year, the JLT Employee Benefits team in Ireland attended the Irish Association of Pension Funds (IAPF) “2013 Annual Dinner” on Thursday 28 February 2013 at the Burlington Hotel in Dublin.

The dinner is one of Ireland's main pension's events of the year and brings together over 700 IAPF members and guests.

This year's event also featured guest speaker David Walsh who is chief sportswriter at The Sunday Times.

High percentage of young employees decline to participate in pension schemes

A series of Focus Groups & Vox Pops around Dublin, organised by the Irish Association of Pension Funds (IAPF) and Ferrier Pearce*, gave an enlightening but concerning insight into how Ireland’s young workforce view their financial affairs – and in particular their attitudes towards retirement planning.


According to Ireland’s Minister for Finance Michael Noonan: "The Government wishes to encourage as many citizens as possible to continue to invest in pension schemes”.

Some key highlights from the Irish pension industry so far in 2013:„„


Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has set out plans for a new universal pension scheme which will aim to ensure workers in the private sector have adequate pension cover in the future.

The scheme will come under the supervision of the National Treasury Mangement Agency and it is envisaged that workers will have to pro-actively opt-out of any new arrangement.
